The story follows the player participating in the Speedhunters Showdown, an organised racing event held on the streets and surrounding countryside of Palm City.

As they participate in more events at the Speedhunters Showdown, they attract the attention of Lieutenant Mercer; the leader of a task force within the PCPD. The player eventually becomes a target for the task force, alongside them becoming an influential participant of the Speedhunters Showdown.

The player ascends through the Speedhunters Showdown, earning bank and fame for their legitimate racing; and through the Palm City underground racing scene, earning a reputation and notoriety for their illegal street racing.

The Story mode is a single-player campaign taking place in Lakeshore, a fictional interpretation of Chicago, Illinois, in which the player competes in in-game weekly qualifiers for a place in the Grand: Lakeshore’s ultimate street racing challenge.

Unable to stop a robbery at a family auto-shop, two friends are pushed to breaking point, giving the player an opportunity to make their mark on the streets earning rep to go from rookie to top racer by winning the Grand and reclaiming a stolen custom car.

The player has to take risks to get attention, but they can make their choices; pulling huge drifts, taking on the Lakeshore Police Department, or placing side-bets on rivals. Although the player can choose how they make their mark, the more attention they earn means turning up the heat.

As part of the player’s path, they’ll meet A$AP Rocky, the prominent rapper and fashion icon, for a chance to take him on head-to-head as a test of skill and style. Better yet, it’s a chance to take his custom 1988 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 for a drive.

Similarly to its predecessor, Prototype 2 is an action-adventure game played from a third-person perspective and set in an open world based on modern-day Manhattan. Like Alex Mercer in the first game, the player character, James Heller, can shapeshift and assume other people’s identities and memories by consuming them, although in the sequel this has become more tactical. Due to Blackwatch’s actions in the Yellow Zone, if the player assumes the role of a soldier, people will react to him in a way that shows that they want nothing to do with him. To make sure that enemies do not overwhelm the player, a dodging system and new, more realistic AI were introduced. Heller is able to use weapons in the game, such as ripping the Gatling cannon off a tank and using it against enemies. He can also sneak up on unsuspecting human enemies and inject them with the Blacklight virus, turning them into a “BioBomb”. Heller also possesses superhuman strength and agility, near-invulnerability to harm, near-flight leaping and gliding, infinite stamina, increased speed, and a sonar sense. The sonar includes a new pulse ability that highlights the key features of an environment to make it easier for the player to find someone, instead of looking in a large crowd for a person with an icon above their head. Before release, the developers stated that the powers in Prototype 2 would be more meaningful than in the first game, appearing as mutations and upgrades that let players decide how they want to play as Heller.

Remnant: From the Ashes borrows its mechanics from franchises such as the Dark Souls series, but rather than simply being melee combat, it incorporates a third-person shooter element where the player can wield up to two gun weapons, one main weapon and one side arm, alongside their melee weapon. These weapons can vary between machine guns, shotguns, hunting rifles, sniper rifles and the like, and can also attach mods to them which give players extra abilities, such as teleportation. Players can create their own custom character, and are required to defeat challenging enemies and bosses found throughout a randomly generated world, though the player still follows a set story. Players are able to upgrade their weapons and armor using materials they find throughout the world. They can also unlock trait points, which can be used to increase the stats of their playable character.

Remnant allows players to team up with two others and progress through the story, where the game scales the difficulty based on how many players are in the game. The way this works is that if a player joins another player’s game, while the joining player will earn the same loot as the original player, once the joining player returns to their world, they are required to progress through the story again.[8] This is because different elements found in one player’s world may not be the same in another player’s; this can vary according to which enemies and which bosses a player encounters. Unlike other similar titles, players do not lose any items or skill points upon death, but are taken back to the checkpoint, where each time the enemies may differ in number or type, thus keeping a variety in gameplay.
